Musical winter storytelling

Winter Tales, Framed with Russian Violin Music

This performance features two winter stories: The Overcoat by Nicolai Gogol and Snow by Konstantin Paustovsky.

The Overcoat is a tragicomic tale from 1843 about a poor clerk in St. Petersburg. Content with his life, his world turns upside down when the northern frost forces him to replace his tattered coat. Though realistic at first glance, Gogol's story takes an absurdist turn, reflecting the eccentricity of both the protagonist and the society he lives in.

Snow is a romantic story set during WWII. A young singer and her daughter flee to a countryside town, where they are taken in by an elderly man who soon passes away. His soldier son, unaware of his father’s death, continues to send letters, one of which the singer eventually opens.
