Museum ’t Behouden Huys is just like Terschelling: unique, idiosyncratic and surprisingly versatile! Step into the atmospheric studio of painter Anthon van Rappard and discover more about his time on the island and his special friendship with Vincent van Gogh. Or board the Lutine and experience the dramatic evening of 9 October 1799, when the ship sank with all its gold. Or go on a voyage of discovery with your family with Willem Barentsz and his crew to the icy Nova Zembla. Since the 1990s, the museum has housed two original nails and several pieces of wood. And something very special: Come and see a chest key that has survived no fewer than 275 polar winters. And did you know that almost all the houses on West-Terschelling were burned to ashes by the English in 1666 and the smoke could be seen far into Friesland? Reverend Grevensteijn will tell you all about it.
