On Terschelling, large groups of various birds can be found. They live in the polders, as well as on the Boschplaat and the mudflats. Bird enthusiasts can enjoy themselves all year round.
1. The Kroonpolders
The Kroonpolders is a dune area with the largest dune lake on Terschelling. The lake is best viewed from one of the surrounding dune tops. It's a great spot for birdwatching, especially for waterfowl.
2. Forests near West
Among the trees here, you can spot the great spotted woodpecker and buzzard. During the spring and autumn migrations, thousands of thrushes can also be seen.
3. Baai Dellewal
From the dike, you can observe oystercatchers, redshanks, shelducks, and various species of sandpipers during high tide.
4. Salt Marsh near Stryp
From the Wadden dike, you can overlook this important high tide refuge. Here, you'll find curlews, lapwings, spoonbills, and common terns. In spring and autumn, large flocks of red knots and bar-tailed godwits can also be seen.
5. Polder
The polder is a beautiful meadow bird area, home to godwits, lapwings, and many common terns during the breeding season. From autumn to spring, you can also spot thousands of geese here.
6. Liesinger Plak
The Liesinger Plak is a shallow dune pond. During the breeding season, it's teeming with shovelers, teals, and coots.
7. North Sea Beach at Paal 18
There’s no better place to see gulls. On the widest beach in the Netherlands, you can discover all sorts of birds. Climb to the top of a dune and enjoy the variety of gulls and seabirds.
8. Grië
Keep an eye out for the peregrine falcon, greenshank, and songbirds in the Kooibosjes from the tip of the Wadden dike.
9. Jan Thijssensduin
Jan Thijssensduin is a high dune with birch and oak forest. It’s a beautiful place to admire migratory birds.
10. Boschplaat
Experience the truly wild nature on the Boschplaat. Via unpaved paths, you’ll reach beautiful spots teeming with countless birds, including spoonbills! From April to September, birdwatchers from Staatsbosbeheer keep watch from two birdwatcher cabins.
